Hegboost

FINAL STAGE OF BIOREMEDIATION OF CONTAMINATED LAND

  Completes bioremediation  Biodegradable
Adds nutrients & bacteria  Stimulates bacterial action
Non-toxic to plants & animals  Used with Hegrem

Hegboost is used only in the last stages of the bioremediation of contaminated land, and only when it is necessary to add to Hegrem to achieve final biodegradation of the more persistent organic compounds. In many cases, Hegboost will not be necessary. It should never be used at the beginning of a treatment when Hegrem is first applied. Hegboost augments the bacterial population in place, and contains additional nutrients as well as non-hazardous oil-degrading bacteria. The biodegradable surfactants in Hegboost permeate the soil and emulsify the remaining amounts of contaminant, which by this stage will be relatively small. The emulsification will increase the total surface area of the hydrocarbons and thus improve bacterial access to it. It will also facilitate the absorption of the oil by the Hegrem, and at this late stage any migration of oil will not be a problem - and may aid absorption. As with Hegrem, the bacteria in Hegboost feed on the hydrocarbons and degrade them to harmless by-products of metabolism.

BENEFITS

* Valuable adjunct to Hegrem to achieve very high rate of degradation in difficult cases
* Used only when necessary to biodegrade persistent residual contamination
* Dilution ensures economy of use
* Non-toxic; simple application; no cumbersome precautions during use

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

NOTE: The powdered bacterial culture contained in the inner cap is sufficient for the entire volume of concentrate in the container. When using part of the liquid only, use a proportionate amount of the bacterial culture, i.e. when using 1/2 of the concentrate add only 1/2 of the culture, and then add water, preferably lukewarm. Let stand for 30 minutes before use.

In cases of treatment by Hegrem where contamination is markedly persistent and where a high degree of remediation is required, it may be necessary after 45 - 60 days to use a supplementary treatment, involving the use of Hegboost.

Add the bran (see note above) to the liquid. One part water should then be added to one part Hegboost. 5 litres of this 1:1 mixture will treat 1 cubic metre of soil (i.e. including the Hegrem still in place). Therefore a 10 litre canister of Hegboost mixed with 10 litres of water to make 20 litres of mixture will treat a volume of 4 cu. m. of contaminated soil. On a larger scale, the dosage is proportionate:

To ensure maximum permeation of Hegboost, the soil should be thoroughly mixed during or after the spraying on of Hegboost. Soil moisture content should still be kept at about 30% at least, and pH should ideally be buffered between 4 and 9.5. Depending on circumstances, the soil should be tilled or turned every 7 or 10 days. This supplementary treatment should be completed within 30 days.
