Hegrem is unique, simple, "low tech", low cost and very effective. It promotes natural attenuation (biostimulation) and provides extra oil-degrading bacteria of its own (bioaugmentation). It consists of waste plant fibres and powdered nut shells which have been treated to enhance their capacity to absorb, retain & immobilise oil without leaching. The fibres contain nitrogen, sulphur and phosphate to stimulate bacterial growth and retain their natural & robust oil-degrading bacteria. The nutrients, and aeration & watering at the time of tilling or mixing, aid the growth and activity of in situ soil bacteria and of the bacteria in Hegrem. Bacteria from both sources are then able to metabolise the hydrocarbons, breaking them down into harmless by-products. This can be done on site, without the need for costly equipment or off-site disposal or treatment; or it can be part of a wider remediation strategy. Hegrem is formulated to make it non-dusty.

BENEFITS

* Effective, simple and inexpensive on-site treatment; quick reduction of VOCs, odours & fire risk.
* Hydrophobic absorption of oil immobilises contamination; up to 8 times more absorbent than conventional products
* Encapsulation of oil prevents leaching and removes further threat to ground & surface water
* Restores contaminated land to fertile condition
* Enables users to meet statutory obligations over contaminated land/brownfield sites
* Use on old contaminated land or on recent spills
* Can be tilled in for shallow contamination, or mixed and back-filled for deeper remediation
* Safe and easy to apply; wide range of oils and other organic chemicals treated
* Approved by the US Government for use in the EPA's Superfund Innovative Technologies & Evaluation Programme (SITE)
* Supported by the US Department of Agriculture; also certified as non-phytotoxic by USDA
* Meets criteria in US Presidential Executive Order 13101 giving guidance to US Federal agencies on preference to the purchase of products imposing fewer burdens on the environment.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Bioremediation of contaminated land depends on key variables such as: type of oil or chemical; intensity depth and age of contamination; temperature; soil type; hydro-geochemistry of site; availability of moisture and air; pH level; presence of bactericides etc. Every site is different and the time taken to achieve a given biodegradation is not precisely predictable. However, if conditions are favourable (pH between 4.5 and 9, temperature of 2 -50°C., adequate moisture and aeration and absence of predators) 40% - 80% degradation can be achieved every 30 days. Full clean-up should be achievable in 120 days maximum.

Before treatment, samples should be taken and a contamination profile of the site, including hot spots, should be prepared as the basis for the chosen strategy & subsequent monitoring. Hegrem should be tilled into the affected soil in the quantities shown below. The soil must be kept 30% moist by watering, but not to the point of saturation. Where massive rainfall is expected, remediation sites should be tented to prevent excess wetness. Further tilling or turning is helpful to improve aeration. If contamination is too deep to be reached by tilling, the soil should be excavated, mixed with Hegrem and backfilled - or formed into windrows. If, after 30-40 days the rate of bioremediation slows markedly, liquid Hegboost should be applied. (See separate notes.)

Quantities of Hegrem required are as follows:
TPH < 50,000 ppm: 1 - 1.3 bags per cu. m
TPH 100,000 ppm: 2.6 bags per cu. m
TPH 200,000 ppm: 5.2 bags per cu. m
